Lefkosia: Saturday 7 November 2026 – Pallas Theatre, Pafos Gate, 16:00 & 17:30 The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra brings to life the captivating score of The Jungle Book (1942), under the baton of the Cypriot maestro Kyriaki Kountouri. Based on five of the nine Mowgli stories from Rudyard Kipling's classic 1894 collection of the same name, this fantasy adventure inspired one of the most iconic film scores of Hollywood's Golden Age, composed by the eminent Hungarian-American film composer Miklós Rózsa. Renowned for his unforgettable scores to classic films such as Ben-Hur , Spellbound , El Cid and The Thief of Bagdad , Rózsa vividly captures the adventurous spirit, imagination, heroism, humour and mystery of the jungle, masterfully blending traditional Indian musical elements with the grandeur of the symphonic idiom. The score features eighteen distinct themes, one for each of the story's principal characters. Through this richly imaginative, almost operatic approach, Rózsa vividly brings to life both humans and jungle animals. Set in India, the tale unfolds through the memories of an elderly storyteller who recounts the adventures of Mowgli, a boy raised in the jungle. Driven by a desire to avenge his father’s death at the claws of the fearsome tiger Shere Khan, Mowgli embarks on a journey filled with danger, discovery and courage. Along the way, he encounters a lost city, uncovers a hidden treasure, saves his village from destruction, and ultimately chooses the freedom of the jungle he calls home. Mezzo soprano Marilena Nisidi – recipient of an honourable mention at the recent International Masterclass & Competition for Opera Soloists organised by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra – performs the beautiful lullaby for Mowgli. Mezzo-soprano Anousha Nazari and guitarist Antoine Morinière present Baroque Labyrinth – an unusually intimate recital in which European early music meets the Persian musical tradition. Born on the shores of the Caspian Sea, Anousha was awarded the International Prize at the Tehran Music Festival before moving to France in 2016, where she went on to appear at major European venues such as Philharmonie am Gasteig in Munich, Salle Cortot, and Beaux-Arts de Paris, presenting a repertoire and an artistic identity that fuse Persian and European influences and build a bridge between these two worlds. Winner of numerous international guitar competitions, including the First Prizes at the International Sevilla Guitar Competition, the Wien Guitar Competition, and the Santa Cecilia International Competition, Antoine Morinière performs worldwide in venues such as Philharmonie de Paris, Wigmore Hall in London, Palau de la Musica in Barcelona, and in such renowned festivals Bachfest Leipzig, London Guitar Festival, Radio France Festival, among others. For their concert in Nicosia, Anousha Nazari and Antoine Morinière will perform works by Handel, Dowland and Strozzi, alongside music by the 15th-century Persian composer Maraghi and in Morinière’s own setting of poems by the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi. In these wonderful arrangements for voice and guitar, the expressive links between these different musical traditions reveal themselves in the power of poetry and in the intense ornamental and melodic writing that brings centuries-old poetry into a new musical language with striking lucidity and passion. Praised for her genuinely distinctive, individual voice, radiant tone and expressive depth, Diana Tishchenko is the 1st Grand Prix winner at the legendary Long-Thibaud-Crespin International Competition in Paris, and recipient of the Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture for her outstanding contribution to the arts. Few works capture the depth of human emotion as powerfully as this programme. Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings is often regarded as one of the saddest and most moving pieces ever written. Unfolding a poignant arc of swell and release, it has become an enduring symbol of collective remembrance and consolation. Barber’s Violin Concerto combines lyrical elegance with dazzling virtuosity. The first two movements unfold with warmth, tenderness and reflective beauty, while the electrifying finale bursts forth with relentless energy, placing the soloist at the centre of a thrilling musical tour de force. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 5 is one of the composer’s most compelling and emotionally charged masterpieces. Unified by its recurring “fate” motif, the symphony charts a dramatic journey from darkness to light, transforming a sombre opening idea into a powerful and triumphant conclusion. LA TRAVIATA Giuseppe Verdi Celebrating 20 years of Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation One of the most moving operas of the Romantic repertoire, Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata comes to life in a fully staged production by the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra, presented through an imaginative and innovative directorial vision by Egli Spyridaki, under the Artistic Direction of Yiorgos Kountouris. The production brings together an outstanding cast of Cypriot opera artists, combining the experience of acclaimed performers with the freshness and enthusiasm of emerging talents. The leading roles are performed by the rising, exceptionally gifted soprano Eleni Charalambous, the distinguished tenor Christos Delizonas and the internationally acclaimed Cypriot baritone Kyros Patsalides.
